The S.T.E.A.M. initiative is more than just an emphasis of the subjects: science, technology, engineering, and math. S.T.E.A.M. education is an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to learning. Students play an active role in their learning where they learn the value of exploration, discovery and problem solving.
More recently, educators and policy makers have been discussing the importance of arts education in innovation and problem solving. Educators concluded that arts remains at the core of the United States’ “ability to discover, create, collaborate, imagine, innovate, inspire, analyze and reflect.” Innovation is necessary to create new industries in the future.
To encourage an enduring interest in S.T.E.A.M.-related topics and careers, Astra’s S.T.E.A.M. Summit marries mentoring by S.T.E.A.M industry women CEOs with practical experience developing business ideas – in this case, mobile apps – and pitching ideas to a panel of experts. This type of programming gives the girls additional self-confidence and the practical business experience of working in teams.
Also unique to Astra’s program, the S.T.E.A.M. Summit includes parents of the girls in the experience so that they also have peer group and expert resources to address issues confronting girls pursuing S.T.E.A.M. education and careers.
